Cigars & Football – A Simple Blend

Week 2 Review

Cigar Butts

Iowa 27 Iowa State 17– Despite playing at home before a mostly friendly, raucous crowd, the Cyclones didn’t seem to have that “spark” in their engine in this game. They got a field goal in the 1st quarter to take the lead and that was the last time they even threatened to lead. When the whistle went off to start the second quarter, the Hawkeyes started to assert their dominance.  But let’s not give all the credit to the black and yellow team, ISU’s offense was more than happy to help them out, turning the ball over four times! It doesn’t matter how good a team is, when they commit four turn overs it’s likely not going to end well. ISU was the underdog favorite going into this game, and it would have been nice if they could have managed to win, but the truth is, the Hawkeyes soundly thumped the hapless Cyclones.

Oregon 35 Ohio State 28– it only took the Ducks 10 attempts before they finally beat the Buckeyes. Oregon running back C.J. Verdell shredded the OSU defense, running for 161 yards and scoring three touchdowns. After he watched tape of the Ohio State vs Minnesota game, he noticed that the Bucks could not stop RB Mo Ibrahim, and he figured if he just stayed healthy, the Bucks wouldn’t stop him, either. The OSU defense did not have an answer against the Quack-Attack. The Ducks were too fast, too nimble, and too determined. OSU’s QB Stroud threw for some eye-popping numbers, 35-54, 484 yards, 3 TD’s and 1 INT. The problem was that he was the only offense the Buckeyes could muster. They couldn’t get the running game into gear to help them out. This is the first regular season loss for Ohio State in the Ryan Day Head Coaching tenure. Although the Michigan faithful may be cheering and giggling, remember that they haven’t beaten OSU in the last five years.

Arkansas 40 Texas 21- it’s possible that the Longhorns might be reconsidering their move to the SEC. Maybe this just isn’t the league for them. They came into this game ranked 15th in the nation, Arkansas unranked. From the moment they unleashed the Hogs from the locker room, the Porkers were all over Texas, kinda like white on rice. The Home team crowd was into this game as if the Razorbacks were playing for the national championship. They were loud and featured the “Horns-down” sign almost to the man. The Arkansas team fed off that as they were more mobile, agile, and hostile than their western neighbors. From the get-go, they had the Horns back on their heels and they didn’t let up until they had those steers Bar-B-Que’d. The Hogs’ rushing attack piled up 333 yards and got touchdowns from four different players. The score would have been much worse if they hadn’t settled for four field goals. Texas, bless their hearts, tried, and they did score in the final minutes to make it look better on the scoreboard, but don’t be deceived, the Longhorns were manhandled the entire game. At the end of the game, the Arkansas crowd was chanting, “SEC! SEC! SEC!” Do you think that the Texas coaching staff and team realize that it’s like this every week in the Southeast Conference? Since the Big 12 that only has ten teams (today) has already accepted Cincinnati, BYU, UCF, and Houston to join them, they might not be willing to accept Texas’ apology and take them back.

Short Smoke Ashes

Alabama 48 Mercer 14 – St. Saban was upset at the lack of intensity the Tide had in preparation for this game, and it took Bama a quarter before they began to take this game seriously.

Georgia 56 UAB 7 – The Dawgs did not suffer from the same malady as the Tide as they destroyed UAB. It wasn’t pretty.

Texas A&M 10 Colorado 7- QB King for the Aggies went down in the first half with a lower leg injury and did not return, which meant the Aggie offense didn’t return until 2:41 seconds were left in the game. That’s when they took the lead for the first time. Come on, Aggies! You’re ranked 5th and you’re in the SEC, there’s got to be better play. The Daughter, was relieved, but not happy

Notre Dame 32 Toledo 29 – It Irish had to come from behind with 1:09 left to win, at home, against Toledo, and there will still be people out there trying to tell anyone who will listen how great ND is. This game did not highlight this notion at all.

Clemson 49 South Carolina State 3 – After the game Coach Dabo called a press conference to declare that his team is the greatest in the nation and should be ranked number one. OK, not really, even ole Dabo couldn’t put that spin on it. His current Tigers have their work cut out for them.

Miami 25 App State 23 – The Hurricanes had a tremendous scare as they had to overcome a second half deficit to beat scrappy App State. The Canes kicked a field goal with 1:09 remaining to retake the lead, and they didn’t draw an easy breath until the game was over.

Ole Miss 54 Austin Peay 17-  Does this shock anyone? Anyone at all? Didn’t think so.

Army 38 Western Kentucky 35- The Black Knights, who rush the ball, overcame WKU, who throws the ball. It was good win for the Cadets. Go Army, Beat Navy!

South Carolina 20 East Carolina 17 – The Gamecocks had to climb out of a 14-point second half hole, and then kick a field goal as time expired to beat the Pirates, but climb and beat they did. Maybe they’re not ready to win the SEC east.

Pitt 41 Tennessee 34- Here at CSF, we are pro SEC, except when it comes to UT, so even though the Panthers are bunch of carpetbaggers, we’re still glad they beat the Vols.

Virginia 42 Illinois 14 – Not completely sure if UVA is that good or the Illini are that bad, but either way, the Cavaliers had a heck of a game.

Minnesota 31 Miami (OH) 26- The Gophers need to row their boat with a lot more gusto, they got the win, but still…. .

Oklahoma State 28 Tulsa 23 – Struggle WIN!! Should have never been this close.

Rutgers 17 Syracuse 7 – The Scarlett Knights beat the Orange, but then…who doesn’t?

TCU 34 California 32 – Far closer than the Horn Fogs wanted it to be but they held on to win.

Air Force 23 Navy 3 – Its always nice when Navy loses, even if it’s to the Falcons. Except when the Mids play notre dame, then losing isn’t nice at all.

Mississippi State 24 NC State 10 – The Bulldog Pirates played far better than expected. It was very possible that the Wolfpack invade the heart of SEC Country and gnaw out  win, but MSU made the SEC proud.

Memphis 55 Arkansas State 50 –  For those who want a barnburner of a game, this one was for you. Neither team played much defense, it was backyard football the entire way.

Kentucky 35 Missouri 28- In the battle of the Cats, the game went back and forth for nearly 60 minutes. UK held the lead, but neither team gave up and it was a heck of a cat fight!

Coastal Carolina 49 Kansas 22 – Them fighting chickens out there in Myrtle Beach are becoming a real football team, not that beating Kansas does that for anyone, but the Chanticleers are good.

Michigan 31 Washington 10 – The Wolverines got another win, that makes them 2-0. This might be the longest winning streak they’ve had under loudmouth coach Harbaugh.
